However, it was George Lucas’ space epic that catapulted Harrison Ford to international fame. Harrison had minor but significant roles in Coppola’s films The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Because of the popularity, Lucas was able to secure funding from Fox to begin production on a space epic he had been planning for years.

American Graffiti went on to become one of the most profitable pictures of all time, grossing more than $140 million on a $770,000 budget. Harrison landed the part and played Bob Falfa in a spectacular performance. Harrison got an audition for George Lucas’ next film, American Graffiti, thanks to Roos (which was also being produced by Coppola). Ford was discovered by producer Fred Roos thanks to Coppola (a producer on The Godfather). He did some carpentry work for George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola by happenstance. Harrison became a carpenter to support his family, which included a wife and two young sons.
